Yu Yu Hakusho: Movie 2

Summary

The Netherworld has overtaken the Spirit World. Botan is sent by Koenma to give the Power Sphere to Hinageshi. Yakumo is after this item so he can restore the Netherworld. In order to protect Hinageshi and keep it out of the demon's hands, Botan hides the Power Sphere inside her body.

Review

In the first part of the movie, Yakumo and his demon gods are trying to destroy shrines at the five different elemental sites in Japan so they can gather Netherworld power on earth. Yusuke and his friends try to stop them, but all the shrines end up destroyed. Later, Botan gets captured by Yakumo so Yusuke and the gang mount an offensive to save her and stop Yakumo's plans.

A lot of the movie is spent fighting and they are well done. Yakumo summons his three demon gods, meaning there are four enemies for the four main characters to fight. It's nice to see Yusuke and the group fighting with such lavish animation. The attacks look powerful and there are some cool scenes like when Yusuke gets blown through the front windshield of a car and Hiei's battle among sky scrappers. I wish that the sound effects received more attention because Yusuke's spirit gun attack and other moves just don't sound as powerful as they look. This is only a minor complaint, however, as most anime don't have the best sound effects anyways.

The movie introduces a new character, Hinageshi, one of the other guides of the spirit world. She tells us a little about herself and her relationship with Botan, but I thought she could use more development. Yusuke seemed to act a little out of character compared to the TV series, which might have something to do with the darker atmosphere in this movie, but he seems colder here. I also thought he didn't get very many lines.

Yu Yu Hakusho: Movie 2 is good, but not great. The story is basic, but it works as an enjoyable action film. Fans of the TV series will find this to be an entertaining side story.

Quite a bit of profanity.

Violence
It's not super violent, but there is a lot of fighting with blood. Some demons get sliced up.

Nothing.
