Shrine of the Morning Mist

Summary

Yuzu Hieda is a freshman in high school and a Shinto priestess. Tadahiro, her cousin who she hasn't seen in several years, begins living with them and attending the same high school. Review

Shrine of the Morning Mist is a fun anime that does many things right. It handles the halved episode times well, it isn't too episodic, and it avoids the monster-of-the-week setup. It's a joyful series with a good sense of humor and a touch of cuteness.

It has a simple yet competent story that constantly moves forward. To protect Hiro at school, the Priestess club is formed. A couple of Yuzu's friends and classmates join the club and then they begin training. Together, they fight off demons and try to stop Ayatachi from calling Yagarena into their world.

What makes this show so good is the fun characters. There's a lot to laugh at: Chika's witty comments, Izumi's obsession with UFO's, and Seiko's losing streak with guys. Another thing to look out for are the silly attack names the girls scream when they fight. Yuzu's feelings towards Tadahiro is presented in a really cute manner and I am happy that aspect saw a resolution. The show even features a cool cat girl. I do wish the characters got more development, but given the length of the series and it's shortened episodes, I guess it was adequate.

For the most part, the show looks great. The animation is very good and the character designs are attractive. Unfortunately, episodes 11 and 12 were outsourced so the animation takes a noticeable drop and the character designs look a bit off. It occasionally uses recycled animation for the girl's attacks, but they don't fight every episode and it didn't bother me in the slightest. Actually, I think some of the action scenes are well done. There are some cool scenes like when Yuzu rides up the arm of a large troll monster on her bike and then throws a knife into its head.

This is a great little show. Even though it has a good, concluding ending, I couldn't help but want to see more of the show's delightful cast. Shrine of the Morning Mist easily gets my recommendation.

Language
Very little profanity.

Violence
There is some blood and some of the monsters look pretty evil.

Sex
There is a beach episode, but there aren't any fanservice style shots of the girls while they are in their swimsuits or anything. Some of the girls do joke around about Hiro and another boy from school being gay, and there is also a picture of them hugging each other naked, but it never shows anything. There is also a scene near the end where Yuzu's priestess outfit comes undone near the top revealing a lot of her chest.
