Summary

During a school trip to Tokyo Tower, junior high school students Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu find themselves summoned to another world called Cephiro. Princess Emeraude is the "pillar" who supports Cephiro through constant prayer, however, she has been imprisoned by high priest Zagato and Cephiro has begun to crumble. Princess Emeraude called these three girls to Cephiro to become the legendary Magic Knights and save her world.

Review

Magic Knight Rayearth is a magical girl series with a fantasy setting.

When the girls first arrive Cephiro, Master Mage Clef informs them of why they were summoned and what they must do. He teaches them a little about magic and they receive armor and weapons that evolve as they get stronger. The cute mascot character, Mokona, guides the girls on their quest to revive the Ruin Gods and save Cephiro.

Nearly every episode has a confrontation between the girls and one of Zagato's minions who attempt to kill them before they mature into full fledged Magic Knights. This makes the show somewhat episodic and straightforward, however, the girls get closer to their goal with each step they make. The Magic Knights also don't use the same set of attacks each episode which keeps things from getting redundant. There is lots of sword fighting, some magic attacks, and even a bit of mecha.

Hikaru is the smallest of the Magic Knights but arguably the strongest and the other two look up to her. Umi comes from a rich family and has a rather outgoing personality that makes her a lot of fun. Fuu is the brains of the group who finds love in the swordsman Ferio. The girls live through struggles and tough battles because they care very much for each other to the point of laying down their own lives. They develop a strong bond and I think they are a good team.

Magic Knight Rayearth aired in 1994 and while it shows its age, it's still very watchable even today. Every episode has some action in it, which looks alright, just don't expect anything too flashy. There are several cute comedy scenes where the girls are drawn super deformed with their small bodies and large heads for a few seconds. The music is good, especially the opening and battle themes.

Overall, I found Hikaru, Umi, and Fuu's journey to be quite enjoyable. There isn't anything special about this series, although it does have a neat surprise ending. I feel that Magic Knight Rayearth is worth the time and money.
