Review
Put a couple of cute high school girls in suits of armor, have them do battle, and include some nudity and you have Hyper Speed GranDoll, which happens to be a rather respectable OVA.
This is a solid 3-part series with a simple story that works out well because it focuses on a small cast of characters. Hikaru is an energetic girl obsessed with a super hero show on television, so when she finds out she is one herself she is quite excited. She fights "to protect the earth and the people I love!", which includes Narazaki senpai, the guy she likes from school. She gets attacked by Friedshalf's underlings, the main one being Sigil. Some good development is given to Hikaru and Sigil and I like the way things play out regarding their relationship. I think Hyper Speed GranDoll captures what it sets out to do, even if it is a bit cliche at times.
Hikaru's father is a mad scientist and has come up with lots of silly inventions to "aid" Hikaru. My favorite one has to be the alarm clock. If it isn't able to wake Hikaru up in time, a little samurai pops out and goes "If I can't even wake you up, what good am I?" He then takes a sword to his stomach and commits seppuku (suicide) which makes the alarm clock explode and force Hikaru out of bed.
The animation is general OVA quality with most of the attention given to the fight scenes which are pretty standard fare. The characters fly around the screen while exchanging blows or evading enemy fire. Hikaru's GranDoll Armor allows her to perform powerful attacks while screaming their names.
Hyper Speed GranDoll is an amusing little show and an enjoyable way to spend 90 minutes. While it's not a must have title, I recommend checking it out for the fun that it is.
