Ai Enma, a mysterious girl who takes vengeance for others and guides souls to hell. She is Hell Girl.
The victim goes to the Hell Girl website and puts the name of the person they want vengeance against. Hell Girl, Ai Enma, then appears to them and gives them a straw doll and explains to them that if they want her to take vengeance, they must untie the red string on the doll. This will send the person straight to hell. However, the victim will also go to hell, but not until they die.
Review
Every episode focuses on a different story, making the show quite repetitive. Almost all of the short stories focus on a girl, which makes me think the show is more directed at us guys. One episode tells the story of a schoolgirl who is entrusted with a large amount of money for her classroom, but "loses" it. She gets blackmailed by the girl who stole it from her, and unable to bear it anymore she accesses Hell Link so Hell Girl can avenge her grievance.
Ai Enma is a quiet, mysterious girl with a soft voice. You don't know much about her, but she always seems a bit melancholy. Later in the show, Hajime, a freelance reporter, and his young daughter Tsugumi begin investigating Hell Girl through Tsugumi's visions.
The repetitiveness is what hurts the show the most. Even after Hajime and Tsugumi are introduced, it's really the same thing over and over again. And there's nothing special about the short stories either. That said, the three-episode ending is pretty decent. It wraps up the ties between Tsugumi and Ai, and provides for a nice background on Ai and how she became Hell Girl.
One aspect that doesn't help the show is the rather lackluster animation. Movements can be a bit stiff and it does recycle a couple scenes. On the positive side, it does have a nice artistic style at times and the opening and ending animations are pretty good.
Hell Girl is an ok series at best. If I had the chance to go back and buy it again or not I'm not sure I would. I can't say I got a whole lot out of it. Very average.
