Review

Fruits Basket has great characters and some of the best character development I've ever seen. The Sohma curse does more than just turn them into animals, it also separates them from society, and has steered them away from having relationships with others outside their own family. The scenes where the Sohma's transform into animals never gets redundant because it's not something that happens all the time. The main focus of the show is Tohru's effect on the Sohma's: how she teaches them some good life lessons, helps them with personal problems and is just there to listen to them.

The cast is quite large, but it isn't overwhelming. Most of the characters are given enough time to get fleshed out pretty well. A majority of the characters are Sohma's, and they are introduced as the series goes. As Tohru interacts with the characters, they realize things about themselves and are influenced by Tohru's opinions. My only complaint about this show is that two of the characters in the Sohma family have only one episode that they are in.

It's fairly episodic, but it never detracted from the show. Many of the scenes are touching but Fruits Basket isn't without it's humorous moments. I burst out laughing countless times while watching it. From the witty comments that are made to the facial expressions, the humor is one of the best things about this show. On the other hand, a couple scenes nearly had me in tears because they were so sad and very moving.

The opening and ending are soft, gentle songs. Most of the background music is made up of simple yet effective tunes. The animation is looks good and the designs are very consistent in each episode.

Fruits Basket is a very heart warming story about friendship and the need to be accepted. The show starts out strong, stays strong and ends strong with a great conclusion that works really well. I can't recommend this series enough.

A little bit of violence, mostly near the end.

Sex
Nothing to really worry about, aside from a few not-so-dirty jokes. One male character mentions that another guy was his first love.
