Final Fantasy: Unlimited

Summary

Two children, Ai and Yu, board a mysterious train that leads to Wonderland, in search for their parents.

Review

Even though it's based off a video game, it isn't related much. Some of the things I noticed from the games are chocobos, cactuar, and the names of many summons. The show follows an episodic path, usually with an enemy to be defeated in each episode. Using the train to explore different areas of Wonderland, each stop introduces a new environment.

The biggest problem with Final Fantasy: Unlimited is with the pacing of the story. There are some filler episodes, but even the more story driven episodes don't really move the plot forward. A lot of the mysteries are revealed in the last 2 episodes. These were some of the best episodes in the series, giving some of the earlier episodes more meaning. The ending does leave some loose threads, but for the most part, it wraps up most of the important stuff.

I found the main characters to be fun bunch to watch, while some of the others are hit or miss. The two children are enjoyable leads, despite the fact that they constantly find themselves needing to be protected. Lisa is following the children for an unknown reason, but begins to take it upon herself to protect them. Then there is Kaze, the hero in many episodes. His weapon makes him practically unstoppable. After all the other characters have tried their futile attacks against the enemy, Kaze just pulls out his magun and blows the enemy away. It gets predictable after the first few episodes since almost nothing can stand up to the magun's summoning power. Unfortunately, this brings down some of the excitement in the action scenes. As for the antagonists, I didn't really care for half of them. Mainly because of their silliness and lack of development.

The CG in most scenes looks pretty bad. The 2D animation is decent, though. Kaze uses his magun in many of the episodes, which is used to summon creatures. The same attack animation, much of it CG, is used each time he uses his magun, although a different summon is used depending on the enemy. The show also has some fantastic music. I like the opening a lot and there are two different ending themes. The background music is the real highlight, though.

Even with it's glaring problems, I still found the show to be an enjoyable way to pass the time and do not regret having this series in my collection. I can't really recommend the show, but it might be worth a look for those who are interested.
