Mika is the teacher of class 2A at Okitsu High School. She's 27 years old, but she looks like a grade schooler because she is shorter than her own students! With a class of eccentric students, Mika sensei is in for an exciting school year!
Review
Doki Doki School Hours is a simple high school comedy series. After viewing the first few episodes, you'll pretty much know what to expect for the rest of the series because it uses the same types of jokes in every episode. Kudou is gay and is always talking about his classmate Suetake, Watabe never stops writing manga, Seki obsesses over how beautiful he believes himself to be, and the tallest girl in the class, Kobayashi, has a "little girl" fetish (read: Mika sensei). Even though it recycles its jokes every episode, it managed not to feel too repetitive. It plays out with episodic stories about the school physical, a field trip, sports day, a student teacher, and a few imaginative ones like the "sci-fi magical period drama." Each episode got me to chuckle a little, and for the most part the show is fairly enjoyable.
Mika sensei is hands down my favorite character. I think she is a lot of fun and I loved seeing her reactions to events. Mika still lives at home, so there are some good scenes between her and her parents. While I liked some students more than others, I didn't think any of them were anything special. They didn't grow on me because they are stereotypical, one-dimensional characters. However, one aspect I did enjoy was how well Mika sensei and her students got along. Class 2A is like a group of friends.
Visually, the show looks simplistic which helps bump the cuteness factor up a notch. The character designs are cute yet ordinary - you won't see any unnatural hair colors or styles. Text often covers the screen to let the viewer know "The next day..." and to show the sound effects of actions like seen in manga. The opening and ending themes are catchy songs, but the background music is forgettable.
Overall, Doki Doki School Hours is an average anime. The comedy is decent and makes for a charming little series. It never completely hooked me, but it's a fun way to pass the time.
