Di Gi Charat

Summary

Dejiko arrives on earth and wants to become the world's biggest idol, but she doesn't have enough money to get an apartment because they are too expensive in Akihabara. The manager at Gamers, the local otaku shop, allows them to live in the storage room upstairs for free if they work at the store.

Review

Di Gi Charat has an unique history. Di Gi Charat (a.k.a. Dejiko) was originally the mascot for a chain of stores called Gamers. As she gained popularity, she eventually starred in her own television series. It later spawned additional TV series, manga, summer specials, and even a theatrical movie.

There isn't really much of a story because the episodes are only 3 minutes long. Basically, Dejiko, her friend Puchiko, and her guardian Gema land on earth in their spaceship, get a job at Gamers and then do a lot of silly stuff. Another idol, and Dejiko's rival, Rabi~en~Rose, appears in the second episode. There aren't any episodes that relate to them as being idols, but they do get a lot of adoration from customers and in episode 15 they sing "Party Night."

In one episode, Rabi~en~Rose helps a boy who ate rotten bread by giving him diarrhea medicine and then tells him the silly story about why she wears dice in her hair. Another episode has a customer asking the girls why they always add pointless words like "nyo," "nyu," and "gema" to the end of every sentence. Later, Dejiko gets bored working at Gamers and says "I wish a monster would appear or something nyo" and one really does.

Even the animation itself adds to the hilarity of the show. The characters are poorly drawn at times (on purpose, of course) and often go into even more exaggerated super deformed states. All the other unimportant characters look like finger puppets. Many of the backgrounds are simple shades of different colors with light sketches used to illustrate scenery.

The show is over before you know it, but I liked it. The characters are cute and likeable, and random comedy works well. Di Gi Charat is a fun series nyo.
