Review

Banner of the Stars continues just after the epilogue of Crest of the Stars. Lafiel is now the commander of her own ship, the Basroil, and Jinto is a member on the bridge along side her. The leads behave in very much the same as they did in Crest of the Stars. There are several good scenes between the two of them, but their relationship really doesn't grow past anything from the first series. There are two other Abhs and a human that are on the bridge with them. A few new officers are introduced, but they don't play very big roles and many of the their scenes are spent with them chit-chatting among themselves. Admiral Spoor is a really fun character, though, so getting more of her in this series is definitely a plus.

There are a lot of scenes of the Basroil in action, but I wish there was more footage of other important ships because sometimes it's difficult to get a feel of who is winning the battle. The higher-ups usually comment on the battle situation while their radar shows a layout of the ships which I think can make the details of some battles confusing. There are several scenes of anonymous larger ships in big battles, but this miscellaneous fighting isn't really tied into the outcome of the battle.

The space battles are quite awesome. There are some really neat scenes like when The Abh fire off thousands of mines at the United Mankind. A lot of the combat is actually evading and shooting down these seeking mines. The animation is improved over its predecessor, the only downside is that some of the battle footage is reused. There is also a bit of CG used on some of the ships. The music is very much like what was in Crest of the Stars.

Banner of the Stars is an excellent sequel to Crest of the Stars, but I have to say that I like the first series more.
