Avenger

Summary

Avenger follows Layla Ashley as she travels across the planet Mars, a barren land filled with mechanical dolls. Leyla Ashley is looking to get revenge on a man named Volk while at the same time protecting a doll named Nei.

Food and resources are scarce on Mars and cities are formed inside domes. Rations are distributed among the cities based on how a cities' gladiator representative performs in a gladiator battle - winner gets all.

Review

Avenger is an action adventure series that has its ups and downs.

In the first episode, Layla meets the doll breeder named Speedy who insists on following her. The story follows Layla, Nei and Speedy as they travel to different domed cities, eventually making their way to Volk City, so Layla can get her revenge on Volk. Nearly every episode brings the group to a new city where they must avoid detection from dolls that are on the lookout for them.

The story is decent, but it has a lot of wasted potential and ultimately leaves the viewer in disarray. There is a good revelation halfway through the series, but it hardly changes the way things play out at all. In addition, there are some huge plot holes because a lot of stuff isn't explained. To top it off, the ending only wraps up the revenge aspect of the show, and it leaves almost everything else hanging. This was a big let down for me because going through the show I had a lot of questions, but in the end it just left me in the dark.

I never really cared much for the characters, probably because there isn't a whole lot of real development. Layla cares a lot about Nei, but it's not explained how they met or why she has such a great desire to protect Nei. Layla hardly speaks at all, giving her a cold personality. Speedy will occasionally ask Layla questions as if to cover up for her silence and give the viewer an idea what she is thinking. There are many scenes where the characters just stand there silently while the wind blows and the camera will pan the characters' eyes with the background music playing which is fairly meaningless but gives the show some style.

The animation and music are the areas where Avenger really shines. The whole show looks really well done, from the smooth character movements down to the eyes that look very beautiful at times. The backgrounds do a great job illustrating the terrain on Mars, the various domed cities, and the mysterious red moon that is always looming nearby. Most of the episodes have some action, with the more important fights looking pretty slick. Avenger's soundtrack is really good, with good opening and ending themes by Ali Project.

Avenger is a flawed series, but I have to admit the show did keep me interested the whole way through. It's worth watching, but not something I would recommend unless you can get a good deal for it.
